Sue Johnston to join Coronation Street?

Sue Johnston
If this tabloid rumour is true today then this fan will be very happy indeed.  But it's in The Sun so take it with a pinch of salt until it's confirmed or denied by ITV.

And so, the Sun says today that fab actress Sue Johnston will be joining Coronation Street as Stella's mother!

The Sun says that Sue, 68 — long-suffering wife of Jim Royle in the BBC comedy starring Ricky Tomlinson, or as we know her better in our house, Sheila Grant from Brookside — was last night said to be "keen" to sign up.

A Corrie insider said: "Everyone is thrilled. She's a brilliant actress. We can't wait to have a member of the Royle Family walking down those famous cobbles and enjoying a drink in the Rovers."

The move would mark a return to the ITV1 show after telly veteran Sue had a cameo role for a handful of episodes playing bookie Sammy Chadwick's wife in the early 1980s.

Dame Judi Dench

Dame Judi Dench reveals eyesight problem

Actress Dame Judi Dench has been diagnosed with a condition that can lead to blindness, she has revealed.
The Oscar-winning star told the Daily Mirror she had age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and struggled to read scripts or recognise faces.
But the 77-year-old has had some treatment and is hoping it might slow the decline in her eyesight.
AMD affects more than 600,000 Britons and last year research was published suggesting it could rise to 750,000.
Dame Judi, who is due to reprise the role of M in the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, told the Mirror: "I can't read scripts any more before because of the trouble with my eyes.
"And so somebody comes and reads them to me, like telling me a story."
AMD, which affects the macula at the back of the eye, is the cause of more than half of registrations for blind and partially sighted people in the UK.
She said: "I've got what my ma had, macular degeneration, which you get when you get old."
Dame Judi Dench says she has no plans to retire from acting
Latest film Dame Judi stars as one of a group of pensioners who move to India in her latest film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which premiered in London earlier this month.
She said the worst part of the condition was not being able to see the person she was having lunch with in a restaurant.
But she said she had no plans to let it force her retirement and added: "You get used to it. I've got lenses and glasses and things and very bright light helps."
She has been chosen to narrate the film Better Living Through Chemistry, starring Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde as a couple engaged in an affair.
Dame Judi won a best supporting actress Oscar in 1998 for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love but she is not expected to attend next weekend's Oscars.

Worzel Gummidge

Worzel Gummidge is a British children's fictional character who originally appeared in a series of books by the novelist Barbara Euphan Todd. A walking, talking scarecrow, Gummidge has a set of interchangeable turnip, mangel worzel and swede heads, each of which suit a particular occasion or endow him with a specific skill.

The books were adapted for radio and television a number of times, most successfully with former Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee taking the lead role in 1979 on ITV; originally produced in the UK, but later in New Zealand, where the character was extremely popular. The series was written by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, adapted from the original books by Barbara Euphan Todd. It was produced and directed by James Hill, and credit really ought to be given to Jon Pertwee, who apart from starring in it, was responsible for getting it off the ground in the first place. Worzel Gummidge was a scarecrow that could come to life. He befriended John and Susan, two children who often had to cover up after him.

Worzel Gummige Down Under!
Worzel Gummidge Down Under is a spin-off of the First four previous seasons. However this time it is set is New Zealand (Worzel describes it as Zew Nealand).
Aunt Sally is taken to New Zealand with the owner of a cultural museum in Piwakawaka, to be displayed there as an xample of British culture. Howver Worzel finds out and is determined to follow her there. Which he does.
Worzel Gummidge Down Under is considered to be not as sucessful as the first four season set in britain, but it is still regarded as a sucess on its own. It explores more of Worzels bravery and affections for "his Intended Aunt Sally". One of the episodes that stands out for most people is called "Worzel to the rescue" which uses Worzels fears to create a feel of unease for the aundience, which is quite a strong thing to do, considering that the program is aimed at children. It also contains scenes of "living dead scarecrows" who only exist to do the travelling scarecrow makers bidding. Which is why the DVD release class it as PG

Martyn James

Martyn James
It is with very great regret that we have to announce that Martyn James, a stalwart of the Pitlochry stage for the last 35 years, passed away yesterday, 3rd January, 2012.  Martyn had been battling serious illness for over a year and after putting up a valiant fight, he is now, finally, at peace.

This news has been met with great sadness by everyone who worked with Martyn at the Theatre in the Hills, and we have no doubt that this reaction which will be shared by our audiences throughout Scotland and beyond when this loss becomes more widely known.

A true man of the theatre, a peerless and highly skilled performer, and a loyal friend, Martyn will be forever remembered not just for his work on the Pitlochry stage, but also for his great spirit, his generosity and his good humour. Martyn's contribution to PFT over the last four decades was immense and he will be very greatly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him, work with him and love him. and Martyn  was first seen at  Perth Theatre in 1972, and since them has appeared 140 production in both main house and the studio theatre. with plays ,musicals and pantomimes under the belt.
